David L. Johnson, 93, died on Friday February 28, 2025, at The Woodlands at The Meth-Wick Community in Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:30 A.M. Thursday March 6, 2025, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, by Pastor Steve Knudson. The burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
David was born on July 14, 1931, south of Ames, Iowa to Mary and Neil Johnson. He farmed with his family for many years and then attended Iowa State University graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. He was employed by Stanley Consultants of Muscatine, Iowa, as a Construction Engineer working on projects in Downers Grove and Highland Park, Illinois, Colorado, and Missouri. While working in Illinois he attended a dance class where he met his wife, Mary. They were married on July 15, 1961, in Ames, Iowa. They moved to Spencer Iowa where he worked as a civil engineer and land surveyor. In 1966, David and his family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he worked for Shive-Hattery Engineers and Architects Inc. Here he provided design of subdivisions, construction of city streets, airports, athletic fields, and the expansion of Collins Radio. He was most proud of his work on the design and construction of Pleasant Creek State Recreational Area and guiding the management of Shive-Hattery. At Shive-Hattery, his roles included project engineer, project manager, team leader, office director, vice-president, President, and Chairman of the Board of Directors.
David was a member of First Lutheran Church and also the Downtown Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids. He and his Mary were strong supporters of the Academy for Scholastic and Personal Success, and St. Luke's Health Care Foundation. He enjoyed traveling in the United States, Europe, and South America, making several trips to Scotland to visit Mary’s family.
He is survived by his son, Neil, and wife Theresa of Swisher, his daughter, Heather, and husband Steve of Cedar Rapids, and grandsons Ian (Alanna), Jake, Malcolm and Nathan. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his parents, Neil and Mary, and his brother Donald.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Health Care Foundation for the benefit of the Child Protection Center.
