Scott William Whiting was born April 30, 1960, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to William and Margaret Whiting. A standout athlete during his high school years, Scott was a proud football player with an incredible memory for every game — he could recall every score like it happened yesterday.
His family moved often during his youth, from Minnesota to Illinois, before settling in Iowa. After graduating high school, Scott earned a degree from Kirkwood Community College, preparing him for a long and dedicated career.
In 1980, Scott began what would become a lifelong journey with the CRANDIC Railroad, joining in Train Service and working his way up to Operations and Customer Service Manager, where he oversaw train schedules, safety operations, and team coordination. Known for his unmatched work ethic and quick wit, Scott built enduring friendships with colleagues, bonding over his ever-ready dad jokes, endless storytelling, and deep-rooted love for the railroad.
It was through the CRANDIC that Scott met the love of his life, Donna, thanks to a co-worker who was also Donna’s brother. From the moment they met, they were inseparable. They married in 1983 and raised three children together, building a life full of love and laughter that was made for the movies. They regularly spent time playing name that tune and teaching the kids about classic rock, cheering on their kids in sports and activities, vacationing at Disney World, and watching stars from the backyard deck.
Though he lived much of his adult life in Iowa, Scott's heart never left Minnesota. The family spent countless summers at lakeside cabins, and Sundays were often devoted to cheering — and occasionally swearing at — his beloved Minnesota Vikings. Scott and Donna were longtime season ticket holders and attended every home game they could, including the unforgettable Minneapolis Miracle, which they witnessed from their corner of the end zone.
After retiring in 2020, Scott and Donna embraced travel, road-tripping across the country to visit their children in Minnesota, Louisiana, and Florida. Whether exploring Arizona’s landscapes or relaxing in California, Scott was always behind the wheel – and always made sure that the car was washed.
In his final year, Scott faced cancer with incredible strength and courage. Even through rounds of treatment, he prioritized time with his family, making cherished memories on a trip to Galena, Illinois, fishing up north, and playing with his grandchildren — the brightest lights in his life. Core throughout his entire life was his Lutheran faith, providing him strength, comfort, and purpose throughout every chapter of his life.
Scott will be remembered for his unwavering loyalty, sharp sense of humor, and the deep love he gave his family and friends. His presence will be missed at Vikings games, summer lake trips, and every family gathering — but his spirit will live on in stories told, laughs shared, and Vikings games watched in his honor.
He is survived by his bride and love of his life, Donna; his daughter, Sabrina (Russ); son, Seth (Kelti); daughter, Kelsey (Jesse) and their two kids Cooper and Cole; three sisters, Darlene (Rodney), Debra (Mike), and Brenda (Craig); along with many nieces, nephews, family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his father, William Whiting; mother, Margaret Whiting; sisters, Barbara Powell and Tamara Jedlicka; brother-in-law, Jerry Jones; and his grandmother-in-law, Evelyn Stemple.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, a cause close to both Scott and Donna, as no child should ever have to experience cancer.
Services will take place at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 3275 N Center Point RD Cedar Rapids, IA on Saturday, July 12 at 10:30 a.m. with a celebration of life to follow at El Kahir Shrine in Hiawatha.
