Jan was born on October 11, 1942, in Spirit Lake, Iowa. She was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Florence (Dahlstrom) Hanson. On October 4, 1963, she eloped with the love of her life, Timothy Speer White, and got married in Aledo, Illinois. Jan earned her bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Iowa. Jan and Tim built a life and raised a family together in Cedar Rapids. Jan initially worked as an elementary school teacher at the College Community School District. Jan supported Tim in his law practice and their joint real estate and business ventures. They also enjoyed spending time at their second home in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin for over 25 years. Jan was an avid reader and was involved in her church. She enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and all sorts of sports. She had an eye for fashion and loved to travel. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and her grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Julie White, of Aiken, South Carolina, Ned (Claire) White, of Buffalo, New York, and Steve (Mindi) White, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; her grandsons: Slade, Thor, and Bjorn White, and her granddaughters: Avery, Samantha, Lucy, and Emily White; her sister-in-law, Leone Hanson, of Arlington, Virginia, and her dog, Sally. She was preceded in death by her husband Timothy, her parents, and her brother, Donald Hanson.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Christ Episcopal Church or to Mt. Mercy University.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Cottage Grove Place and St. Croix Hospice for all the love and support they showed Jan while she was in their care.
