Memorial

On July 17, 2026, we lost a kind man, a teller of stories, a singer of songs, a caregiver, habitual cheater at family games, a lover of dogs and babies, a car, train, and electronics enthusiast, a green thumb, a tinkerer, an ornery old coot, a husband, dad, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend.

George L. Follmer, 83, of Marion, died on July 17, 2026, at the Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, followed by a committal at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

George was born on June 6, 1943, in Oelwein, to William and Grace (Pope) Follmer. In 1963 he joined the United States Air Force and served at the Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii.

George ended his service in 1967 and married Paulette Murray on August 5, of that same year, in Aurora, Iowa.

George and Paulette enjoyed travel and did so throughout the United States and Europe. They were faithful members of First United Methodist Church in Marion.

He is survived by his daughters, Paula (Cory) Maddy of Marion, Georgia (Tony) Tallman of Urbandale; five grandchildren, Owen, Rolin, Jackson, Had, and Claire; his sister, Betty Follmer; and his long-time caregiver and friend, Vicky Wieser.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Paulette Follmer; his daughters, Jackie and Pam Follmer; and his parents, William Follmer and Grace Follmer; his step-mother, Mary Follmer; and five brothers.

The family would like to thank Summit Pointe Senior Living for making George’s final years full of friendships and good memories.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
