Craig Harrison Watson, 75, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at St. Luke’s Hospice House after a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the Cedar Memorial Chapel Stateroom. Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Craig was born on December 26, 1950, to William and Marion (Wing) Watson in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School in 1969. On August 2, 1986, he married the love of his life, Phyllis Klostermann, and together they created a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, family, and devotion.
When Craig married Phyllis, he opened his heart completely to her two daughters, Michelle and Sara. He never saw them as stepchildren; they were simply his girls. From the very beginning, he loved them as his own, offering steady support, quiet guidance, encouragement, and a love they could always count on. As the family grew, he proudly became “Papa,” a name he treasured, and nothing brought him more joy than time spent with his grandchildren.
Craig had a gentle heart and a generous spirit. He showed care in the most meaningful ways—through small acts of kindness, a helping hand, a warm smile, and the dependable presence others knew they could turn to. He enjoyed gatherings, grilling burgers and steaks, attending school events and ball games, celebrating milestones, and finding happiness in the simple moments that became cherished memories.
A loyal Iowa Hawkeye fan, Craig was often recognized by the Hawkeye hat he wore with pride. He also enjoyed cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, golfing with family and friends, and the fun of a spirited card game. Some of his happiest moments were spent escaping to the mountains with Phyllis and toasting with a good glass of wine. Craig cared deeply about his neighborhood and was passionate about serving through his homeowner’s association.
Craig dedicated many years to the auto glass industry, beginning with Iowa Auto Glass Center and later retiring from Safelite. Throughout his career, he was respected for his integrity, strong work ethic, and commitment to doing every job well.
Craig is survived by his daughters, Michelle Wessels Lockhart (John) and Sara Wessels Domann (Chad); his grandchildren, Jennifer Nicholson (Zach), Sam Lockhart, Brett Domann, and Jacob Domann; his sister, Ruth Ann Smigielski; sisters-in-law, Carol McKowen (Ray) and Mary Salow; brothers-in-law, Bill Klostermann (Judy) and Jerry Heiring; and many extended family members and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Marion Watson; his beloved wife, Phyllis; brothers-in-law, Tom Smigielski and Rick Klostermann; and sister-in-law, Teresa Heiring.
Craig will be remembered for his kind heart, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to the people he loved. His family was deeply blessed to know him, and his presence will remain with them always.
The family is deeply grateful to the doctors, nurses, and staff at The University of Kansas Medical Center, Barrymore Senior Living, and St. Luke’s Hospice House for their compassionate care and support throughout Craig’s illness and final days.
