John R. Dessert passed away on Friday, August 7, 2026 at the age of 72.
John was born on April 1, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan, to Edward and Jean Dessert. When he was five years old, his family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended All Saints Elementary School and graduated from Regis High School in 1972.

John earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1976 and began his career as a Credit Analyst for Bandag, Inc. in Muscatine, Iowa. He later joined McGladrey in Waterloo, where he became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Throughout his career, John held a variety of financial positions in Iowa, earning the respect of colleagues through his professionalism and dedication.
John is survived by his brother, Jerry (Barb); his sisters, Jeanne (Ed), Suzanne (John), and Michele (Mike); 31 nieces and nephews; and his lifelong friend, Mark Carlson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Jean Dessert; his brother, Michael; and his sister, Mary Anne.
John will be remembered most for his wonderful sense of humor. He had a remarkable gift for finding joy and laughter in everyday moments and could effortlessly tell—or invent—a joke that brought smiles to those around him. His quick wit, warm spirit, and genuine desire to make others laugh left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
