Rita Marlene Barker, a cherished soul known for her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love for her family, passed away peacefully at home, as she had wished, on May 6, 2026, at the age of 92. Her journey began on August 26, 1933, in the quaint town of Wood Center, Iowa, where she was born to loving parents Laurance Ash and Pauline Iowa "Smith" Ash.

Marlene, as she was affectionately known, carried a vibrant spirit and a passion for life that touched everyone she encountered. She graduated from Wood Center School and furthered her education at a business school in Cedar Rapids. Her thirst for learning led her to attain her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification later in life, a testament to her enduring dedication to helping others.

In 1953, Marlene married the love of her life, Richard Barker, on a beautiful spring day, May 17th. Together, they built a life rich with love, laughter, and adventure until Richard's passing. Their marriage was a beacon of commitment and partnership, inspiring all who knew them.

Marlene's career was as diverse and dynamic as she was. She started her professional journey at Herman Brown and later, alongside her husband, owned several successful self-employed businesses. Her roles were as varied as they were impactful, including becoming a foster parent, a produce buyer, a secret shopper with Nash Finch Company, and a devoted CNA. Despite her many professional pursuits, Marlene was also a remarkable homemaker who created a nurturing and loving environment for her family.

Her talents extended beyond her professional life. Marlene was an avid cake decorator and a creative soul who found joy in crafting, sewing, and cooking wonderful meals for her family. Her flower gardens flourished under her care, much like the relationships she cultivated throughout her life. Even at 92, Marlene's zest for life was evident as she spent hours thrifting at the Cedar Rapids Goodwill outlet.

Marlene's commitment to her community was unwavering. She was an active member of the Order of Pythian Sisters and the Cedar Rapids Community Concert Association, where she shared her passion for music and community service.

Above all, Marlene was a devoted mother and grandmother. She leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience in her children: Di'Mar Barker of Chicago, IL; Clifford Barker (Lisa) of Battle Creek, MI; Shelly (Roger) Wassmer of Marion, Iowa; and Susan Barker of Ravenna, OH. Her grandchildren, Teisha (Rich), Joshua (Sarah), Johnathon, Paige, Quinn, and Madison, along with her great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Olivia, and Avalyn, will forever cherish the precious memories and the life lessons she imparted.

Marlene is predeceased by her parents, her beloved brother, her devoted husband Richard, and now rests in the eternal embrace of those she dearly missed.

Funeral services will be held on May 15, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a life well-lived, filled with love, compassion, and joy.

Following a short graveside service, friends and family are invited to a celebration of Life in the community room at Eagle Ridge 1285 Red Fox Way Marion, IA

Rita Marlene Barker's life was a testament to the power of love, the strength of family, and the beauty of a life well-lived. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
