E. Sharon Harthun, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, at the age of 82. She was born on March 26, 1942, in Rapid City, South Dakota, to Harry Barfoot and Clara B. Stevens. Sharon was a remarkable woman whose life was filled with love, laughter, and a deep commitment to her family and community.
Sharon’s journey began in the picturesque landscapes of South Dakota, where she spent her early years surrounded by the beauty of nature. She later pursued some college education in business, equipping herself with the skills that would serve her well in various aspects of her life. On December 29th, 1961, she married Lyle T. Harthun, the union of marriage was held in Custer, South Dakota. United together they moved to Iowa and began a life raising their sons in the wonderful neighborhood of C Ave. Hiawatha.
Throughout her life, Sharon was known for her caring nature and her quick, inventive verbal humor. She possessed a unique ability to make those around her laugh and feel at ease. As a mother, she was devoted to her two sons, Dale and Rick, and welcomed her daughter-in-law, Sandy, into the family and Sharon took joy in her role as a grandmother to her three grandchildren: Kristin Ann, Melinda, and James. Time spent with them was filled with love and proud memories that she treasured dearly.
Sharon dedicated a significant part of her career to Frank Magid Associates, a research-based strategy consulting firm, where she worked as an interviewer before retiring. Her professional life was marked by her dedication and strong work ethic, qualities that resonated throughout her personal life as well.
In her free time, Sharon found immense joy in cooking and feeding her loved ones. Her kitchen was often the heart of the home where delicious meals and wonderful gatherings took place. She loved taking care of her yard, ensuring it was always tidy and vibrant, a reflection of her nurturing spirit. Sharon also enjoyed spending time with her neighbors and friends, embracing the community around her, and cherishing dinner dates with her group of ladies. These connections brought her endless joy and fulfillment.
Sharon's warmth and kindness touched the lives of many, making her a great friend and neighbor. Her legacy will live on through her family and the countless lives she impacted on with her generosity and spirit.
Sharon is preceded in death by her parents, Harry Barfoot and Clara B. Stevens, as well as her husband, Lyle T. Harthun.
She is survived by her two sons, Dale and Rick, daughter-in-law Sandy, and her three grandchildren, Kristin Ann, Melinda, and James.
A funeral service will be held at a later date, with arrangements still to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be directed to them as they navigate this difficult time.
