Susan Ann Eppel, age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 6, 2026. A visitation will be held at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church on Monday, September 21, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. A memorial service will begin at 11:00 AM and will include a Nursing Honor Guard service.
Sue was born on March 3, 1934, to Eithel and Walter Hocking and grew up in Dubuque, Iowa. She moved to Cedar Rapids in 1952 to attend St. Luke’s School of Nursing, where she met Bob, her future husband, and together they built their life.
Sue will be remembered for her inclusive nature, positive attitude, and many talents. A joyful and accomplished pianist, she also played the violin and French horn and served as a church organist for many years. She worked as an RN at St. Luke’s Hospital for 27 years and received the Smulekoff Award for Nursing Excellence in 1983.
Sue had a passion for nature, and animals seemed to love her. She had an ease about her in the kitchen as well as in the garden. Many will remember the log house she and Bob built and lived in for 28 years, with Sue serving as the general contractor, painter, bricklayer, and landscaper.
She was actively involved at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, where she made many lifelong friends, including a Gourmet Group that remained together for more than 50 years. Her unconditional love and hospitality never wavered. She treasured her family and welcomed all who passed her way.
Sue is survived by her three children, Jan (Mike) Nelson, Jim (Jane) Eppel, and Julie (Paul) Copping; grandchildren, Jaci (Tim) Skiba, Stef (Sam) Fortin, Lucas Eppel, and Jacob (Kayla) Eppel; seven great-grandchildren; and extended family, John (Sue) Toussaint and Carol (Dave) Gannon and their families.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents; and her brother, Roger Hocking.
Her family has the deepest gratitude for the compassionate and loving care Sue received at The Views of Marion and St. Luke’s Hospital.
