Frederick Werden Balster, 92, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2021. A visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 30, 2021. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM. A private graveside service will follow In Monmouth, Iowa. 

Fred was born on July 16, 1929, to Ernst and Stella (Werden) Balster in Monmouth, Iowa. He graduated from Monmouth High School. He served in the United States Army with the 3rd Infantry Division during the Korean Conflict. Using the G.I. bill, he went to Iowa State University and graduated in 1955 as a mechanical engineer. It was there he met his wife Ruth Montgomery and they married in 1955. In retirement, Fred volunteered for the Indian Creak Nature Center where he enjoyed making maple syrup. He was an active member at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. 

He Enjoyed traveling, camping, and being outdoors. He cherished the time spent with his family. 

Fred is lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Ruth; children Martha (Steve) Lenz, and Brian; grandchildren Kathy, and George; and his sister Ernella. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, and his son David.
