This saddens me so much!! I worked at the Mt Vernon Rd Hy-Vee store when Gary came there as an Asst Manager....a couple of years later he did me a tremendous favor when I worked for him briefly again at 1st Ave when he was the manager. He helped me greatly at a point in my life when I needed it...I had the upmost regard for that man!!
I moved out of state, but I made it a point a couple of times to stop in and say "Hi" to him when I got back into the area for a visit when he managed the 32nd street store...just wanted to tell him thanks again for what he did for me.
I can still remember the Cubs jacket that he wore to work, and his great sense of humor also....he was just a great guy!!
Gary impacted me, and I feel blessed to have known him. You have my heartfelt condolences. God Bless

My deepest condolences to Gary's family. Like many I met Gary via Scouting and he was a great mentor in Wood Badge and for the Board of Directors. I am sure he is looking down from his new camp site and will be helping all of us continue to work our tickets. He will be missed!!!

I met Gary in the 1960s when we were both students at St. James Catholic School in Washington, Iowa. We developed a strong friendship through Boy Scouts that took us from winter campouts to canoe trips to Boy Scout camps…like Camp Wakonda. The values and leadership skills Gary learned in becoming an Eagle Scout stuck with him throughout life. From developing a strong work ethic as a young boy working for his dad, to becoming a store director at Hy-Vee, to just being an overall great person…Gary embodied the Boy Scout Promise: “On my honor, I promise that I will do my best…”.

My friend Gary has gone ahead..... A fellow Scouter, Gary and I were friends a long time. He has attended his 'last Campfire'. His great knowledge of life, his zest of living, and his wonderful smile and laugh, allowed all of us to call Gary our friend. My condolences to the Family.
