Always thinking, Fred loved to figure things out, share his knowledge, and fix things. But most importantly, he loved the Lord and Christ’s promise of life in him through faith. It is with great earthly sadness that we announce the passing of Fred into the arms of his Creator on March 24th.

Fred, a native of Cedar Rapids, was born on March 6, 1942 and was the first son of Fred Wittke Jr., and “Rose” Wittke.  He often fondly reminisced about how he named his younger brother, “Jimmy.” Fred’s parents, Jim, and his first daughter, Angela, preceded him in death.

Fred is survived by his former wife, Rebecca, with whom he shared a deep family bond, and by his daughters, Paula and Dawn, the latter of whom cared for him during his final illness.

Fred worked at Goss Graphic Systems (printing-press company) for over 35 years, first as a machinist, then as an industrial electrician. Recognizing his precision and great talent for solving problems, Goss honored him by arranging and paying for his specialized training and education in electrical maintenance. Fred was one of the first employees of Goss, and was there to close the doors when the business ended.

Fred loved enjoying time with his family, whether playing putt-putt, attending races, fishing, or relaxing near the river and other bodies of water.

A graveside service will be held on April 3rd at Cedar Memorial at 3:00 pm, followed by a celebration of life reception at Groundswell Cafe in Cedar Rapids.

Flowers may be sent to Cedar Memorial, 4200 First Ave NW, Cedar Rapids. Memorials may be directed to the family.
