Mary was an original founder (among a group of 30) of the Cedar Rapids Gay and Lesbian Resource Center decades ago. She was serious, kind and cared about going about things the correct way. She held leadership positions in the group over the years as our physical location changed several times.
She and her partner Sandy hosted the OWLS potlucks many times in their home. (Older Wiser Lesbians) These monthly gatherings alternated between CR and IC.
I was a fair bit too young to be considered either old OR wise, but the group was kind enough to include me, anyway.
I learned so much today about her and her wonderful family at the service! Because we were typically in group situations, I didn't get to know Mary on a very personal level, so today was an education. I learned to appreciate her in new ways. Thanks for that.
Mary's committment to community and family were quite far reaching.
I'm glad that she is so well loved. Love never dies.

I have many fond memories of holidays and special occasions spent together, and I am deeply saddened by Aunt Mary’s passing. Along with sadness, the main thing I feel when I think about Mary is pride. With her commitments to education, activism, and community, I have always been and will always be proud to call Mary my aunt. She will be missed.

I am so sorry for the auto-correct error of replacing Barbara for Mary. Please except our humblest apologies.

Mary was a godsend to her 20+ first cousins who for years offered her time to our dear 93 yr old aunt. Driving over 2 hours each way she accompanied her to and from doctors appointments. She assisted with moving our aunt from her home of over 60 years to assisted living. Mary was also instrumental in organizing several milestone birthday parties and family reunions over the years! Mary’s giving heart will truly be missed!

I had the privilege of partnering with Mary in staff development at Linn-Mar for many years. Mary was organized, hard working, and wanted to come along side colleagues to help them reach more students and help them succeed. She was a special woman who cared in so many ways.

Our sincerest condolences for the passing of Barbara Meuhl. She was a kind and loving person. Always willing to step up and help. Her kindness and compassion to Aunt Lita was always a nice link to family as she reported updates on Lita's health. May she rest in peace with our Heavenly Father. You will be missed.
