Dorothy McIntyre Chester, 96, passed away peacefully February 16, 2025, at the West Ridge Care Center.

She was born in Nebraska City, Nebraska on April 6, 1928, to Elmer McIntyre and Thelma Joiner McIntyre. They moved to Cedar Rapids when she was five years old. She attended Roosevelt High School and later in life attended Kirkwood Community College.

She married Delmar C. Chester October 12, 1946. They had daughter Kathleen Chester Burnes. Bob Burnes was her very special son-in-law. She dearly loved her grandson Tucker Burnes and wife Sarah and granddaughter Abby Pitcher and her husband Robert. Her wonderful great grandchildren are Maddie Rule, Jackson Burnes, and Braxton, Maddox, and McKenna Pitcher.

The center of her life was her family and home. She loved taking care of her house and yard. She worked for many years cleaning homes and then worked in the Center Court customer service at Westdale Mall for 20 years, retiring when she was 80 and the mall closed.

She was an avid walker and walked at Westdale Mall 6 mornings a week from the time the mall opened until it closed. She made many friends and wonderful memories at the mall.

She was a great volunteer. She was involved from the beginning of the Especially For You Race. She spent many hours helping with the Reach to Recovery Program and drove many people to get their radiation treatments at Mercy Medical Center.

She also donated countless pints of blood and platelets over the years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Richard and Donald.

She is survived by her sister Jackie (Ronald) and many nieces and nephews.

A family gathering is being planned. Any memorial contributions should be made to Shrine Children’s Hospital.
