It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alfred Wesley Schwitters (Al) of Cedar Rapids, IA, who passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, at the age of 90. Alfred was born in Morrison, IL, on June 12, 1934, to the late Alfred and Evellyn (Argraves) Schwitters.
Alfred was a proud member of the Navy Reserves and later served as a dedicated fireman in Sterling, IL. He went on to have a long and fulfilling career as a machinist/inspector at Allis-Chalmers, P&H, and Terex in Cedar Rapids, IA. Al was also known for his community spirit, volunteering his time for various organizations and activities, including supporting high school sports programs and helping at local hospitals.
Al was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, where he found comfort and fellowship throughout his life. Al never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
He shared 71+ years of marriage with his beloved wife, Joyce Marie Schwitters. Together, they built a loving family and cherished memories.
Al is survived by his wife, Joyce; their children, Daughter Pamela Dietz (Larry Belverstone) and Pam's sons, Corey Dietz (Tanner and Trevor) and Curtis (Candice) Dietz (Riley and Jackson); Son, J Charles Schwitters (Debra Schwitters) and their children, Stephanie Amanti (Luke, Leah, Timothy) and Shannon Schwitters (Anthony, Wesley); Son, Ray Schwitters (Melanie Schwitters) with their sons, Kirkland and Benjamin.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Jeannine (Schwitters) and Francis Williams, and is survived by his niece, Adele (Larry) Williams.
Al will be remembered for his kindness, hard work, and devotion to his family and community. His legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be at Joyce's residence on June 7th, 2025, from 11:30 to 2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Fund.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all those who have offered love and support during this time. Al will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
