My condolences to Mary Lou and the entire family on Barbara’s passing. So wish I could personally share, but have a scheduled flight out of state. Barb was very kind and helpful to me when I began work for the U.S. Courts in 1975. She showed tremendous strength and resilience in navigating the massive bankruptcy challenges of the early 1980s farm economy. She was a leader in so many respects.

As a young lawyer, I was thrust into work in the Bankruptcy Court. I was not well-prepared for this career path but I was fortunate to have the help of one of the most patient, professional and caring people I have encountered in court administration. Barb was an incredible resource for young, inexperienced bankruptcy attorneys. She never made me feel that I was asking “dumb” questions and was patient and thorough in her explanations of the many arcane procedures required in bankruptcy practice. Barb epitomized what it means to be a public servant.

It is an honor to have known Barb and called her a friend and mentor. We worked closely on the 1978 Bankruptcy Reform Act and subsequent important bankruptcy legislation, Her common sense insights into bankruptcy administration were priceless. Her upbeat, warm personality always a pleasure. She was a vital leader in the American Bankruptcy Institute and the American College of Bankruptcy. She left her mark on the field.
