Memorial

James Dennis “Den” Usher, 72, of Walker, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Sept. 24, 2026, at MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center after a long battle with diabetes.

James, affectionately known as Den by his family, loved fishing and trains of all sizes.

James was born on Oct. 6, 1953, in Cedar Rapids, the son of James H. and Mary Ann Usher. After graduating from Metro High School, he joined the Navy, training as a Utilitiesman and serving with the Seabees, just as his father had. James was honorably discharged in 1973 and remained proud of his service.  

He is survived by his children, Jeremiah Usher of Cedar Rapids, Briana Evans of North Liberty, Nathan (Amber) Usher of Marion, Leah (Daniel) Melton of Cedar Rapids, and Catharine Aschan of Marion; his sisters Donna (Terry) Nielsen of Center Point, Mary (Brian) Godwin of Cedar Rapids, and Kate (Brian) Staplekamp of Cresco; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents James H. and Mary Ann Usher; first wife Darlene Mollenhauer; and second wife Susan Wacker Usher.

A Memorial service will be held on Sunday October 4, 2026, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, where a visitation will begin from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with full Military Honors. 

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in James’ memory.
