Deacon Paul Zimmerman, 82, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa passed away May 12, 2026, after a valiant fight with Frontal Temporal Dementia with primary progressive aphasia. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at the Cedar Memorial Chapel Stateroom, with a vigil service starting at 4:00 PM.  A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 18, 2026, at St. Pius Catholic Church with a visitation starting at 10:00 AM. A private committal service will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
 
Paul was born October 26, 1943, to Paul and Clotilda (Ploessl) Zimmerman in Dubuque, Iowa. He met the love of his life Madonna Wieser when he was a sophomore, and she was a freshman at Wahlert high school. They were united in marriage on May 22, 1965.
 
His Catholic faith was important to him, and he was ordained a deacon in 1984 serving St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids for 40 years. He was a talented speaker who touched many with his heartfelt homilies. He proudly served in the Navy as an aviation anti-submarine warfare technician on the USS Kearsarge during the Vietnam War. 
 
He cherished time spent with his family, and members of his parish. His kindness and service to others was admirable. 
 
Deacon Paul is survived by his children, Michael (Kelly) Zimmerman, and Michelle (Ken) Hill; grandchildren, Michael Zimmerman, Sean Zimmerman, Sydnee Hill (Sam Gubbles), and Brady (Lauren) Hill; his great-granddaughter, Brynlee Zimmerman; his brother Tom (Cathy) Zimmerman and sister Rita (Jim) Pechota along with many wonderful family and friends.
 
He is preceded in death by his wife, Madonna Zimmerman, and his parents.
