Shirley Ruedy

Born in Anamosa, IA
Born on Jan 14, 1936
Departed on Jan 30, 2026

I corresponded with Shirley several times and always received a reply. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990, so her columns really "hit home". I cut the columns out, made copies and often shared them with others who had the same diagnosis. I also heard her speak on one occasion to a full house of cancer advocates and survivors. She left a legacy that will continue to impact. My sympathy to her family and friends; may she rest in peace and may you all know she was truly a difference maker.

Shirley led a full life devoting her talents and personal experiences to help others. The world needs more Shirleys. Sorry to hear she passed

I was so sorry to hear of Shirley’s passing. I had the pleasure of working with Shirley when I was at The Gazette, especially when I was in the features department from 1993 to 2000. I edited many of her cancer columns and Q-and-A profiles of prominent eastern Iowans. She was the most talented, dedicated journalist I knew in more than 35 years in the business and a good confidant and friend. She helped thousands of people as a writer and an advocate. I extend my deepest sympathy to George and the rest of her family.
