James Robert “Biscuit” Matias, 62, passed away on August 3, 2026, following a brief illness.

Jim was born on September 10, 1963, to Robert and Barbra Matias. He graduated from Washington High School in 1982 and Kirkwood Community College in 1984. Following his education, he proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1984 to 1988, achieving the rank of Corporal. During his military service, Jim was a member of the Marine Corps rugby team and served as a shooting range instructor.

After completing his service, Jim returned to Cedar Rapids, where he built a career as a union construction laborer. A few years later, he met Joanne Anderson, and together they welcomed their son, Brandon, on October 24, 1992.

One of Jim’s greatest joys was becoming a grandfather. He welcomed his granddaughter, Olivia, on February 3rd, 2026, and cherished the time he was able to spend with her.

Jim is survived by his brothers, Mike and Matt Matias; his sisters-in-law, Kathy and Kim; his son, Brandon Matias, and daughter-in-law, Ashleigh; and his beloved granddaughter, Olivia.

Jim will be remembered for his service to his country, his dedication to his work, and the love he had for his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Marine Corps League in Jim’s honor.
