In Loving Memory of Dr. Lewis Wilson Finch
November 11, 1937 – July 16, 2025
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Dr. Lewis Wilson Finch, lovingly known as Lew, who left this world surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Newton, Iowa on November 11, 1937, Lew dedicated his life to education, leadership and faith – leaving a legacy that has touched countless lives.
Lew earned his doctorate in Education Administration from Utah State University, setting the stage for a remarkable career that would span decades and shape the future of public education across multiple states. He served with distinction as Superintendent of Schools in Cloquet, Minnesota; Jefferson County, Colorado; and finally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he retired in 2004 after a 35-year career marked by excellence, integrity and vision.
In recognition of his profound contributions, Lew was honored as Iowa’s Superintendent of the Year in 2004. His insights and expertise in education earned him invitations to speak before legislative bodies – including the U.S. House of Representatives – and educational organizations both nationally and internationally. His words inspired dialogue, innovation, and progress in the field he loved so dearly.
On August 3, 1957, Lew married his lifelong partner and the love of his life Ardyth Carol Heinrich. Together they built a family rooted in love, laughter and shared values. Lew is survived by Ardyth and their three children: Teresa Saxowsky of Eagan, Minnesota; Kristen Gray of Colorado Springs; and Michael Finch of McMinnville, Oregon. He also leaves behind 12 beloved grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
Lew is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, and three sisters. Though their absence was always felt, he lived each day with gratitude for the family and blessings that surrounded him.
A visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church. A celebration of Lew’s life will be held on August 16, at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
