Jean Marie (Striegel) Duncan, 87, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Terrace Glen Village, with her daughter at her side. The Community at Terrace Glen Village opened a vibrant new chapter in Jean’s life after she was widowed in 2022 and provided her with loving care and dignity after her cancer diagnosis in September 2024. Also supporting the family after her diagnosis was Hospice of Mercy.

Jean was born on March 10, 1937, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Marie (Reinhold) Striegel. She graduated from Davenport High School in 1955. When Jean was 15 years old, she met a 16-year-old boy named Richard (Dick) Lee Duncan. They were married five years later, on September 7, 1957. This marriage flourished for just shy of 65 years.

Jean’s first job as a teenager was working at a movie theater concession stand in Davenport, Iowa. As an adult she worked at Alcoa (Aluminum Company of America) and at Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. Jean and Dick retired to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 2000, to be near their only child, daughter Teresa (Teddi) Smith and her family: husband Roger, and children Levi and Galina.

Jean enjoyed reading, playing cards, dining out, and red wine. She was a private person by nature and spent her first months at Terrace Glen Village preferring time alone decorating her apartment and reading series books by her favorite authors. However, she inexplicably became quite social and began joining in on games of Euchre, Rummikub, and Hand & Foot, six out of seven days per week. Jean’s family cannot emphasize enough the gratitude we feel for her supportive circle of friends and outstanding caregivers.

Per Jean’s wishes, there will be no services.
