Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at 11:00am at Cedar Memorial in Cedar Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be at 10:00am at Cedar Memorial preceding the funeral services.

Don was born on October 10, 1935, in Shellsburg, IA, the youngest of 11 children born to John and Pearl (Gillan) Schlotfelt. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1958-1961.

On November 22, 1961, Don married Maryann Schieb, with whom he shared a beautiful life until her passing in 2012. Don is now joyfully reunited with his beloved bride.

To say Don was an avid Iowa Hawkeye sports fan is an understatement—he bled black and gold! He was also a longtime fan of the Chicago Cubs. He spent many hours cheering on his sports teams.

Being the youngest in a large family, Don experienced a lifetime of love, activity, and family gatherings. One of the most cherished traditions was his role as Santa Claus, delighting children at extended family Christmas celebrations for many years and making special appearances for close friends over the years.

Don was deeply committed to supporting his family and community. He was actively involved in Boy Scouts of America, guiding and supporting his sons and grandsons through countless activities and leadership opportunities. His dedication was recognized with the prestigious Silver Beaver Award, honoring his exceptional leadership and service in scouting. He was also a devoted member of Hope Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, where his faith and kindness touched many lives.

Don spent his career primarily in the auto industry, dedicating many years to the parts department at Rapid Chevrolet. Later, he continued his work at Duffy’s Collectible Cars and Midwest Wheel, where he shared his expertise and passion for automobiles.

Don is survived by his three children: Bill (Lori) Schlotfelt of Cedar Rapids; Amy (Todd) Benda of Canton, SD; and Mike (Shannon) Schlotfelt of Cedar Rapids. He was a proud and loving grandfather to eight grandchildren: Donny, Jessica, Stacey, Jonathan (Brianna), Josh, Angelina, Braeden, and Killian; and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth. He is also survived by his sister, Joann Campbell, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Maryann; his parents, John and Pearl Schlotfelt, and nine of his siblings.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hope Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, IA or the charity of your choice in Don’s honor.
