Born on December 2nd, 1941, in Des Moines, Iowa, Michael was the son of Madge Delores Byal and Daniel Gurval Phelan. Alongside his surviving twin brother Patrick Phelan, and proceeded in death by siblings Daniel Phelan and Carmella Skinner, Michael grew up surrounded by love and camaraderie.

Michael's legacy extends through his two sons, Ryan Michael Phelan and Sean Patrick Phelan. Sean, residing in Los Angeles, has carved his path in the music industry as an engineer and recording studio owner, while Ryan, a resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, shares his passion for music through teaching and performing with local bands.

Educated at Newman High School, and Loras College in Iowa, Michael pursued his passion for Music Education, later earning master’s degrees in art and music from Arizona State University in Tempe and Georgia State University. Throughout his career, Michael touched the lives of countless students as a successful choral music teacher at schools such as Prairie High School, Regis and Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids, and Hampton Dumont High School in Hampton, Iowa.

Beyond his contributions to education, Michael showcased his artistic talents in graphic design, leaving his mark at Krause-Gentle Corp. (Kum & Go) and as a freelance designer creating logos and banners throughout the area.  His fondness for calligraphy and Christmas cards reflected his attention to detail and warm-hearted nature.

For 15 years, Michael directed the church choir at St. Patrick Church in Cedar Rapids, alongside his former spouse and great friend Jan Logan Jasiewicz.  His musical talents extended beyond the church, as he graced Von Maur Department Store with his piano performances for over 25 years at Lindale and Westdale Malls.

In his leisure time, Michael found joy in cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes, his passion for cooking, interior design, and challenging himself with crossword puzzles.

Michael Henry Phelan will be fondly remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his passion for music and education, and his artistic endeavors that left an indelible mark on those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and creativity that will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
