Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; her parents; sister, Betty Batcheler; and niece, Melissa Opfer.

She was born August 5, 1933, in Rural Linn County, the daughter of Joe and Mary (Dasmisch) McGowan. She graduated from Alburnett High School in 1951.  Mary married her high school sweetheart, Norman A. Nietert on September 30, 1952, in Central City, Iowa.

Mary’s life was her family, the farm and her garden. Heaven help whoever left the gate open “the cows are in my garden!”

She made countless trips, taking kids to activities at Linn-Mar. Even after the kids had driver’s licenses, she and Norman continued the trip to watch the kid’s activities.

Mary was an excellent cook; her noon meals were enjoyed by many a crew who was at the farm to chop  corn or bale hay. She made Peanut Brittle at Christmas time and was widely shared.

She dedicated self-less hours to others, her family, neighbors and friends. Even with all the “Hats” that she wore Mary was able to find time for herself spent monthly with the Northstar Homemaker’s Club.

Memorial may be given to St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Central City.
