Memorial

Our loving sister and aunt, Linda L. Schimberg, 78, of Cedar Rapids, IA passed away on May 18, 2023, at her home.  Daughter of Gwendolyn A. and Charles C. Schimberg, Jr., Linda was born in Cedar Rapids on March 27, 1945 ten minutes after her twin sister Carol was born.

She graduated from Regis High School in 1963 and received her nursing degree from the Mercy School of Nursing in Des Moines, IA.  Linda worked at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri from 1969 to 1975.  She returned home to Cedar Rapids in 1976 to care for her parents.  She worked at Schimberg CO. for a period of time, and then returned to her true love of nursing at the Birthplace at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids to take care of new babies and their mothers.

Linda was a faith-filled devout Catholic, and a life-long member of All Saints Catholic Church.  She used the gifts and talents God gave her to live a life in service to others and will always be cherished, loved and remembered as being a woman who opened her heart to all in need.

Linda’s home was often the center of family gatherings. Nieces and nephews will always remember Aunt Linda as the fun aunt who enjoyed taking care of them and their babies; every one of whom had a special and unique relationship with her.

She loved to travel to visit family in Shreveport, Kansas City and Des Moines and made many wonderful memories vacationing with all in Hawaii, Jamaica, St. Martin, Table Rock Lake, Lake of the Ozarks and Door County.

As Linda’s health declined, her neighbors took such a role in watching out for her.  We appreciate and thank them for their love of Linda.  We would also like to thank Dr. Melanie Stahlberg and all the medical caregivers who took care of Linda.

Linda is survived by her sister, Carol (Otto) Mertens of Independence, MO; sister-in-law, Lynda Schimberg of Cedar Rapids, IA; sister-in-law, Judy (Ken) Braswell, of Shreveport, LA along with her beloved nieces and nephews, Diana, Jimmy, Johnny, Wendy, Susan, Jaimi, Sara, Mandy, Paul, Ben, Stacy, Dave, Charlie and Jolyn and 35 great nieces and great nephews.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Chuck and Gwen Schimberg; siblings John (Jack) Schimberg, Patty Pigott, Jim Schimberg and Joe Schimberg; and brother-in-law, Dick Pigott.

A private family service will be held at All Saints Catholic Church followed by a burial at Mount Cavalry in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catherine McAuley Center, 1220 Fifth Ave SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403.
