Wayne A. Kinney passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on July 20, 2022, at Country House Residence in Cedar Rapids. A private family service will be held later.  Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.  

Wayne was born on May 9, 1929, in Salem, Iowa the son of  Omar and Myrtle Jane (Young) Kinney. He grew up in a loving family of seven children-Darrell, Alvin, Wendell, Larry, Irma, and Lois. 

On January 9, 1949, he married Reva Greer and together had 3 children, Bruce Wayne who died at 8 months, Kevin Allan, and Deborah Ann. They divorced in 1974. Wayne married his 2nd wife, Judith Buscher Kinney on October 10, 1990. 

Wayne’s early education was a one room schoolhouse through the 8th grade and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. Wayne’s early working career was a laborer with a plumbing contractor for 9 years when a refrigeration subcontractor asked Wayne to go into business with him and 7 years later the subcontractor retired, and Wayne bought the business and began Modern Piping Inc doing Commercial and Industrial Mechanical Contracting. Wayne sold Modern Piping in 1983 and retired spending his Winters in Scottsdale, Arizona, and Summers in Iowa. He enjoyed playing golf into his late 80’s and he loved a good game of Euchre with his friends. Wayne was an avid Hawkeye fan and rarely missed a Hawkeye Football game.

Throughout his working career Wayne was a businessman and a community leader. He was very active in the Cedar Rapids community and was a member of Mechanical Contractors of Iowa for 25 years serving as President during some of that time, was on the Board of Directors for First National Bank for 16 years, voted Cedar Rapids Man of the Year in 1979, and was a 50-year member of the Shrine and a 32nd Degree Mason. Wayne served in the Iowa National Guard being discharged May 10, 1950.

Left to cherish Wayne’s memory his wife Judy, son Kevin (Ginny) Kinney, daughter, Deborah Williams, grandchildren, Zach (Jamie) Williams, Seth Williams, Chad (Jenny) Kinney, Shawn (Kelly Harger) Kinney, 3 Great Grandsons, 2 Great Granddaughters and a brother, Larry Kinney of Minneapolis, Minnesota, brother-in-law, Galen (Brenda) Buscher, sister-in-law, Joyce (Tony) Burg and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters and their husbands, Irma and Howard Mabeus of Mt. Pleasant, Beverly “Lois” and Dallas Six of Des Moines, 3 brothers and their wives, Darrell and Florence Kinney of Mt. Pleasant, Alvin and Juanita Kinney of Burlington, Wendell and Roberta Kinney of Mt. Pleasant and sister-in-law, Karen Kinney of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The family wishes to thank all the wonderful caregivers at Country House Residence, and Mercy Hospice for the excellent care Wayne received.

Donations may be made in Wayne’s name to the Shriners Hospital for Children or Hospice of Mercy.
