Mary J. Hykes, 96, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa passed away on Thursday, January 20, 2022, at Northbrook Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral service at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 31, 2022, at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories where friends may call after 1:00 PM on Monday, January 31, 2022, at the chapel. Pastor Steve Knudson will officiate. Private burial at the Conrad Cemetery in Conrad. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
Survivors include her two daughters, Carolyn Devick of Gilman and Lucille (Konrad) Hykes Hesse; two grandchildren, Nora (Eugen) Peters and Albert (Elisabeth) Hesse, all of Germany: and her caretakers and dear friends, Wendy & Joey Sumner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; and a daughter, Jeannette.
Mary was born April 11, 1925, in Marshalltown, Iowa the daughter of Charles and Elmira (Clemens) Ames. She married Glenn Hykes on November 10, 1946, in Marshalltown. As a girl she played the clarinet and went to the National Music Camp in Interlochen, MI and enjoyed music her entire life. She attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa for 2 years. She was an avid fan of all sports her entire life. She also had a great love of cats and always enjoyed them in their home throughout the years. Throughout her life she was grateful to be able to travel to every place in the world she wanted to see and do the things she dreamed about.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
