Memorial
Marie Byers passed from death into eternal life, Sunday August 22, 2021. Visitation will take place Tuesday, August 31 from 5 – 7 pm at Cedar Memorial. Graveside service September 1 at 10:00 AM at Cedar Memorial, followed by a memorial service and luncheon at Stonebridge Church, 1829 Stoney Point Road SW.
She was born August 19, 1926 to Margaret and Walter Sutcliffe of Palo. When she was a preschooler, she frequently ran away to the school on the corner to be with the kids. The teacher told her mother to just let her stay, so she graduated from Roosevelt High School at the age of 15 and went on to study at Iowa State Teachers College. She then taught at several Linn County one room schoolhouses for several years. She worked at the Gazette for 31 years.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children: David (Janet) Fattig of Alamo, CA; Larry Fattig of St Louis; Daughter-in-law, Sara Fattig of MN; Dan Fattig of Minneapolis and Lynn (Glenn) Vosatka of Cedar Rapids. Her stepchildren: Bill (Ann) Byers and Pam Byerly. Her brother: Joe (Corrine) Sutcliffe. Eight grandchildren: Sam Fattig, Eric Fattig, Gregory Fattig, Michael Vosatka, Jess Fattig, Brian Fattig, Joshua Vosatka and Anne Fattig. Three step grandchildren: Dylan and Levi Graves, Jennifer Byers, Nathan Byerly and several great grandchildren. She additionally leaves her close friend, Tom Foster who has lovingly cared for her for ten years.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill Byers, her son, Doug Fattig, her parents, and two step-grandchildren: Casey Byers, who died a hero serving our country and Justin Paul Byers.
Marie lived out her faith in Jesus Christ by selfless, compassionate care for family and others. She was a long time member of Edgewood Baptist Church and in recent years, Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Memorials may be given to Wounded Warriors or a Bible preaching church of your choice.
