Judith Elaine Doherty, 80, passed away Friday, January 17, 2014 at Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha. A Memorial Funeral mass will be held Monday, January 20, 2014 at 12:30pm at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids.
Judy was born on August 23, 1933 to Anthony and Winifred (O'Connell) Linske in Chicago, Illinois. She was a graduate of Maryville Academy in DesPlaines, IL. On May 22, 1954, she married Daniel Doherty. They were married for many years and together raised seven children. They later divorced in 1980.
Judy worked for many years in the men's department of Von Maur at Westdale Mall until her retirement in 1998. She loved helping her customers find just the right items and enjoyed her interactions with the public. Upon retiring, she devoted her time developing her relationship with her two granddaughters who lived nearby, Anna and Kerry Brousard. In addition, she became an active volunteer in her church with the youth group, cooking for the Americorp workers, and assisting in the trift shop. Her favorite activities were swimming, doing water aerobics, yoga, and spending time with her family. She loved life itself and found a way to have fun in any setting.
She is survived by her seven children; Deborah Uhrina of Hiawath; Mark (Sally) Doherty of Vancouver, WA; Nancy (Ed) Brickner of Highland, IN; Pamela Doherty of Highland, IN; Douglas (Gloria Guerra) Doherty of Renton, WA; Dr. Scott Doherty of Neskowin, OR; and Kelly (Dave) Brousard of Cedar Rapids. She had seven grandchildren; Arnold and Aaron Uhrina, Taylor and Kelsey Doherty, Steven Doherty, Anna and Kerry Brousard and one great grand child Adrian James Doherty. In addition, she had a special love for her friends Pat (Tim) Davis who cared for her deeply.
Judy is preceded in death by her parents.
During the past two years, as she fought her battle with leukemia, she became very close with Dr. Ghosh and his staff at the Ghosh Center for Oncology. She fought each day of treatment with a smile and his staff there became her friends in this battle. She loved Dr. Ghosh and what he stood for and requested any memorial contributions be directed to the Anna Purna Ghosh Foundation.
